Retinopathy of Prematurity

Background

Retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) is a serious vasoproliferative disorder that affects extremely premature infants. Milder forms of ROP often regress or heal without intervention; however, more advanced stages can lead to severe visual impairment or blindness. ROP remains a serious problem despite striking advances in neonatology: it can lead to lifelong disabilities for the smallest survivors of neonatal intensive care units (NICUs).
